Meditation by Father John
"The Finish Line is for the Ego, the journey is for the soul"

When we try to control things, and make things happen the way we want, often we are listening to voices we have accumulated over the years. "This is success." "You're a loser if you don't X". "No one will love you if you are not smart enough, tall enough, thin enough, funny enough, etc." When we try to respond to all those voices we are acting from our Ego and we desire something very particular. But when we let go, when we listen deeply to our hearts, when we practice loving-kindness and compassion toward ourselves and others, as Jesus did, we are willing to explore where the path takes us. We trust that there is more than we can imagine. We allow ourselves to be surprized. Then we just may discover that it is not the finish line which is so important, but enjoying the path as life unfolds. Thanks be to God!

The quote above I discovered during a visit to Camp Glisson, and it was attributed to Pattie Gonia.

Prayer for Young Persons
from the Book of Common Prayer

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
