DEVOTION
I wonder. Does the love of God have things in common with Romantic love? I want to be gentle and careful because not all of us are successful at romantic love, and some of us, myself included feel a bit raw. For many of us romantic relationships are a bit of a roller coaster, and I think that is okay. But for most of us, I think, the desire to have a special someone to love with our heart, mind and body is built right into us.
We desire companionship, and connection, and touch, and the ability to bare all to someone and to both love and be loved. A few people do not have this desire for romantic love, love that expresses itself physically, and that is okay, but many of us do. I do suspect, however, all of us do need love and connection in our lives. It seems like a built in need.
I wonder whether the thing in common between romantic love and the love of God, is that it seems kind of built in. We desire to be loved, and we express some of the best of ourselves when we truly show love to others and to the world.
Not all of us will have partners, and that is okay. We are complete people even if we do not. No doubt about that. However, I suspect all of us become who we truly are when we are secure in knowing that God loves us just as we are, right now, more than we can imagine, and I suspect that all of us, right now, become more fully alive when we love right back, God, our neighbor, ourselves, and the whole wide Universe.
I think I see that in Jesus. Do you? Can God bless us by thinking about romantic love even when that side of life might be hard? What do you think? I wish all couples a happy day, and all of us not in relationships, I wish for us and everyone a deep appreciation for both being loved and being capable of love in millions of ways. Happy Valentine's Day everyone.
